Description

Corvus is an exceptional songbird genus in that it contains members (i.e.C. brachyrhynchos, C. ossifragus) that exhibit three rows of subalular coverts instead of the usual oscininen umber of two. The extra row consistso f three or four plumes lying between the mediansa nd marginalsa ssociatedw ith primaries 6, 7, 8, and 9. By definition of George & Casler (1972) these are "lessers," but whether they are homologous with the lessers of more primitive birds is most uncertain.B
